The Resilience Champion

Exploring Your Why – Activity & Discussion

Each week you will have access to a downloadable version of the activity & discussion post (may also include a worksheet).

Activity: Work through the following questions either individually or as part of your Resilience Champion team. (You may use the worksheet as a tool to support the activity.)

  • Explore Your Why:  Think about what brought you to your setting in the first place. Why do YOU do what you do? (We challenge you to peel back the layers on this question and consider how your own past experiences with risk and protective factors may have influenced your path).
  • Articulate a vision statement: What is your dream for your setting?
  • Articulate a mission: How are you going to achieve your vision?

Discussion post:  Post your answer to these questions:

  • Why do YOU do what you do? (We challenge you to peel back the layers on this question and consider how your own past experiences with risk and protective factors may have influenced your path).
  • What are your vision and mission statements for your setting?

When I started pursuing a degree in human services and behavioral science it was with the saying, “Be the person you needed when you were younger” in mind. My personal struggle with mental illness and domestic violence stated as a child. When my turning point occurred, I had no support system and no knowledge of resources to help me along the path. That is what I want to be for the clients I serve at the DV shelter where I work. My vision statement is, “For Survivors to break the cycle of abuse and reach their full potential”. My mission statement is, “To help Survivors build a foundation for a healthy and happy future through empowerment and education.”
