When we apply a trauma-informed approach, we recognize that behaviors, thoughts, and feelings are shaped by our past experiences, and we care for the underlying challenges, not just the symptoms those challenges create.
That way, we can work to heal the root cause, improve outcomes and experiences, and build more resilience within ourselves and those around us.
This 90-minute online training session provides a foundation to help anyone understand or brush up on the basic science behind the ACEs framework and what it means to develop a trauma-informed and resilience-building approach.
Building on The Basics, this self-paced, six-part online training program walks you through the process of identifying concrete steps to implement a trauma-informed and resilience-building approach in your own setting.

“ACEs” stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences or Adverse Community Environments. Study after study shows that ACEs, such as abuse, neglect, violence, and poverty (to name a few risk factors), cause toxic stress and can lead to significant health, behavioral, and societal issues.
Resilience is the ability to withstand or recover from difficult conditions. It allows us to think clearly, make intentional choices, communicate, and connect with others during stressful situations. Our resilience can be affected when we have frequent or long exposure to toxic stress from ACEs (especially when we don’t have protective factors to act as our “adversity buffer”).
A trauma-informed approach is a framework for addressing the origins of a challenge so we can build resilience, achieve higher quality outcomes, and break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. When we apply a trauma-informed approach, we realize the symptoms ACEs can cause, dig deeper to recognize the root causes of these symptoms, and respond to the underlying need. This process allows us to resist going back to old habits and to create more resilient organizations and communities.
